What Is Half-Hourly Metering? A Guide For Your Business
Half-hourly (HH) metering is an advanced electricity metering system that records a businesses electricity consumption in 30-minute intervals throughout the day. Instead of a single monthly or quarterly reading, this smart technology provides a detailed, granular breakdown of how and when your company uses energy. The meter automatically sends this data to your energy supplier, allowing for more precise billing and valuable insights into your energy usage patterns.
The Two Types of Half-Hourly Meters:
There are two main types of HH meters you might encounter:
- P2 Meters: These are older, traditional HH meters. They require an Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) device to be attached. The AMR device collects the 30-minute consumption data from the meter and transmits it to your energy supplier.
- P4 Meters (or ‘SMART’ Meters): These are modern, digital HH meters. They have the communication technology built directly into the meter, meaning they don’t require a separate AMR device. They automatically send data to the supplier without extra hardware.
Both types serve the same purpose: to provide detailed, 30-minute consumption data. The main difference is in their technology and how they send data.
Who Needs Half-Hourly Metering?
By law, any business with a Peak Load (PL) of 100kW or more in any given 30-minute period must have a HH meter. These are typically large industrial or commercial sites like factories, data centres and large office buildings.
Businesses with a PL between 70kW and 100kW can also choose to install a HH meter and many take advantage of the benefits.
Benefits of Half-Hourly Metering:
Switching to HH metering offers significant benefits for large energy consumers.
- Accurate Billing: With HH metering, your invoices reflect your actual consumption. This helps prevent overpaying or underpaying, making budgeting and financial planning more predictable.
- Improved Energy Management: The detailed data provides a valuable look into your energy usage patterns. You can identify peak consumption times, find inefficient equipment, and discover opportunities to move energy-intensive tasks to off-peak hours when rates are lower.
- Access to Cheaper Tariffs: HH meters give you access to flexible, time-of-use tariffs that aren’t available to other businesses. Suppliers can offer lower rates for using power during specific off-peak periods, allowing you to save money by adjusting your operations.
- Enhanced Reporting and Auditing: The detailed data simplifies energy auditing and reporting, making it easier to comply with energy regulations and show a commitment to sustainability.
