The Purpose and Benefits of SECR
SECR is a mandatory reporting requirement for qualifying UK companies, aimed to enhance transparency and encourage proactive engagement with energy efficiency and carbon reduction across the business sector.
SECR benefits beyond compliance:
Increased Awareness of Energy Costs: By mandating detailed reporting, SECR naturally elevates the importance of energy consumption within an organisation. This increased visibility highlights where energy is being used, or potentially wasted, and its associated costs.
Informed Decision-Making for Energy Efficiency: The data collected through SECR provides a foundation for identifying opportunities to reduce energy consumption, allowing businesses to make informed decisions about investing in energy-efficient technologies.
Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation: Aligning with national goals, SECR contributes to the UK’s broader climate change targets and directly encourages businesses to significantly reduce their carbon footprint.
Boosting Reputation and Trust: Companies that proactively demonstrate commitment to sustainability and transparency through robust SECR reporting can significantly enhance their reputation among customers, investors, and employees.
Operational Savings: By actively managing energy consumption and implementing efficiency measures, businesses can realise substantial, long-term operational cost savings, directly impacting their bottom line.
Who Qualifies for SECR Reporting?
The SECR scheme applies to a wide range of UK companies, including:
- Quoted Companies: All UK incorporated quoted companies (of any size) are subject to SECR.
- Large Unquoted Companies: This includes companies that meet at least two of the following three criteria in a financial year:
- Annual turnover of over £36 million
- Balance sheet total of over £18 million
- More than 250 employees
- Large Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs): LLPs meeting the same criteria as large unquoted companies are also required to report.
