Europe’s Electricity Grids Under Pressure from Record Heatwave

Recent periods of extreme heat have caused strain on Europe’s electricity systems from repeated heatwaves this summer. Additionally, the heat has significantly impacted the ability of power plants to generate electricity, raising concerns about the grid’s resilience in a warming climate.

 

Increased Demand and Reduced Supply:

The summer’s heat has created an increase in demand for electricity across Europe, mainly due to the use of high air conditioning and other cooling systems. Data from Eurelectric reveals a 7.5% year-on-year increase in electricity demand across the EU during the intense heatwave from 23rd June-3rd July.

Simultaneously, the conditions driving this demand are hindering electricity generation. High temperatures are a major issue for a significant portion of Europe’s power plants, particularly those located on rivers.

 

Nuclear Power:

Many nuclear reactors rely on river water for cooling. During the June-July heatwave, 17 of France’s 18 inland nuclear reactors experienced capacity curtailments due to the high temperature of the river water. As a result, the water was too hot to effectively cool the plants without impacting the aquatic ecosystem.

 

Thermal Power Plants:

Coal and other thermal power plants are also facing cooling issues. Additionally, low river levels caused by drought have impacted barge transport capacity, disrupting the delivery of vital fuel supplies.

 

Europe’s Energy Future:

The recurring heatwaves and their effect on the power grid may signal a fundamental shift in Europe’s energy landscape. According to the head of Oxford’s Environmental Change Institute, the traditional pattern of peak electricity demand occurring in winter could soon shift to summer. This would require a complete rethink of how the grid is managed and how capacity is planned.
