Sizewell C: A New Era of British-Owned Nuclear Power
Following the final investment decision signed by Energy Secretary Ed Miliband on July 22, 2025, Sizewell C is set to become the first majority British-owned nuclear power station in over three decades. The station is currently under construction in Suffolk, adjacent to the operational Sizewell B station and the decommissioned Sizewell A site. Sizewell C is a key part of the UK’s strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, enhance energy security and provide reliable, low-carbon electricity.
Using modern technologies, the station will feature two European Pressurised Reactors (EPRs), offering improved fuel utilisation and increased power output. Once operational, Sizewell C is expected to generate 3.2GW of electricity, powering approximately 6 million homes and meeting around 7% of the UK’s electricity needs.
Aside from domestic benefits, Sizewell C is projected to have a significant impact on businesses, and the benefits can be seen in several key areas:
Supply Chain Opportunities:
The construction of Sizewell C has represented a vast investment in infrastructure, with a capital cost of around £38 billion. The project’s developers have a stated goal of awarding a large portion of this spending to UK businesses, creating a vast number of opportunities for companies across the supply chain.
- Construction and Engineering: Businesses specialising in civil engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, and specialist construction services are essential for building the power station.
- Manufacturing: The project will require a wide range of manufactured goods, from concrete and steel to complex reactor components.
- Logistics and Services: Companies in transport, logistics, accommodation, catering, and other support services will be needed to support the large workforce during the construction phase.
Enhanced Energy Security and Grid Stability:
Sizewell C offers a critical source of reliable, low-carbon, baseload power. This is growing increasingly important as the UK transitions away from fossil fuels and increases its reliance on intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar.
Unlike renewables, which depend on weather conditions, nuclear power provides a constant and predictable supply of electricity. This helps to balance the grid and ensures that power is available no matter the weather conditions.
